- Description: Pushover is honestly cheap for individuals — $4.99 once, no subscription. The real problem shows up once your homelab is noisy: 10,000 free messages a month sounds like a lot until every workflow, alert, and backup job is pinging you.

I'll be upfront about this one, unlike most of the posts on this site: Pushover isn't expensive. For an individual, it's a one-time $4.99 per platform (iOS, Android, desktop) with no subscription at all. If you just want push notifications on your own phone, Pushover is already about as cheap as software gets, and I'm not going to pretend switching saves you meaningful money there.

Where it actually gets tight is message volume. Every Pushover account gets 10,000 free API messages a month, shared across every app you've connected. That sounds like a lot until you're running the kind of stack this blog is about — n8n workflows, Grafana alerts, uptime checks, backup confirmations, cron job failures — all pinging the same account. Once you're past 10,000 messages in a month, Pushover charges $25 for another 10,000\. That's the actual cost that scales with a busy homelab, not the $4.99 up front.

## What ntfy does differently

[ntfy](https://ntfy.sh/?ref=ditchthesaas.com) is an open-source push notification service. You can use their free hosted instance, or self-host it, and either way there's no message cap to run into — the official apps let you point at any server, including your own, so switching later doesn't mean re-plumbing every integration.

| | Pushover | Self-hosted ntfy |
| ---------------------------- | ------------------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| Individual app cost | $4.99 one-time per platform | Free (open-source app) |
| Free message allowance | 10,000/month | No cap |
| Cost past the free allowance | $25 per additional 10,000/month | $0 — same server, no metering |

## What it costs to run

ntfy is a single lightweight Go binary (a Docker image is also available), and it's genuinely one of the smallest things in this whole stack — idle memory use is well under 50MB. I don't run it on its own VPS; it shares the same small instance as the rest of my monitoring stack, so the marginal cost is close to $0\. If you were starting completely fresh with nothing else running, a $6/month Vultr instance — on the low end of the $6–$12/month range I use across this stack — covers it with room to spare.

## Where Pushover is still the better call

If you're a solo user sending yourself the occasional notification — a handful of automations, not a full homelab's worth of monitoring — the $4.99 one-time Pushover app is genuinely fine, and standing up a server for that is more effort than it's worth. This swap makes sense once message volume, not price, is the actual constraint, and once you're already running a VPS for other things so the marginal cost of adding ntfy is close to zero.

I run this alongside the rest of the stack described in [the full cost roll-up](https://ditchthesaas.com/how-i-cut-my-saas-bill-by-90-by-self-hosting-everything/), on [Vultr](https://www.vultr.com/?ref=9922680).
