# n8n vs Zapier: How I Cut My Automation Bill by Self-Hosting

## Why I moved off Zapier

Zapier's free plan (100 tasks/month, 2-step Zaps only) is fine until it isn't. The moment you need multi-step automations, the pricing jumps fast. As of 2026:

- **Free**: 100 tasks/month, 2-step Zaps only
- **Professional**: from $29.99/month (750 tasks, multi-step allowed)
- **Team**: from $103.50/month (2,000 tasks, shared workspace)
- In practice, most teams land at **$50–200/month** once multi-step Zaps and overages kick in.

## What self-hosted n8n actually costs

n8n is free to self-host, with no limit on workflows or executions. The only real cost is the server it runs on.

- A small VPS in the $5–20/month range is enough for moderate workflow volume
- n8n Cloud exists too (Starter $24/mo for 2,500 executions, Pro $60/mo for 10,000), but self-hosting skips that bill entirely
- Over a year, self-hosting saves roughly $200–700 versus n8n Cloud, and considerably more versus Zapier

## A real workflow I run on it

One automation I actually use: a Git webhook that fires on repo events and automatically posts a comment to the related task in my project tracker. On Zapier this would need a webhook trigger plus a multi-step Zap — Professional plan territory. On self-hosted n8n it just runs, no incremental cost.

## When Zapier is still the better call

If you don't want to touch a server, or there's nobody on your team willing to own that piece of infrastructure, Zapier's fully-managed model is still the rational choice. But if you're already comfortable spinning up a box and your workflow count keeps growing, switching to self-hosted n8n turns your automation bill into a fixed, small VPS cost — permanently.

## Getting started

All you need is a small VPS with Docker installed. I run mine on [Vultr](https://www.vultr.com/?ref=9922680) — their smallest instance ($5–20/month depending on specs) is plenty to start, and you can scale up only if execution volume actually demands it.
