# GlitchTip: A Self-Hosted Sentry Alternative for Error Tracking

- Description: Sentry's Team plan is $29/month for 50,000 errors — fine until a bad deploy or a noisy dependency blows past that in a day. GlitchTip speaks the same Sentry SDK protocol with none of the per-event metering.

Sentry's Team plan is $29/month (monthly billing) and includes 50,000 errors before overage pricing kicks in. That sounds like plenty until a bad deploy, an infinite retry loop, or one noisy dependency starts logging the same exception thousands of times in an afternoon — which is exactly the kind of incident error tracking exists to catch in the first place. Sentry's billing is also genuinely complicated: errors, spans, replays, logs, and attachments are all metered separately with their own overage rates, so predicting your actual bill from usage is harder than it should be.

## The actual numbers

| | Sentry Team | Self-hosted GlitchTip |
| ----------------- | ---------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------- |
| Base monthly cost | $29.00/month (50K errors included) | $12.00/month (shared VPS, no event limit) |

That's a **59% reduction** at baseline, and the real difference shows up during exactly the incident that error tracking is supposed to help with — a spike in errors costs you nothing extra on GlitchTip, where on Sentry it's the moment you're most likely to blow through your quota and land in overage pricing.

## What GlitchTip actually is

One important distinction: I'm not talking about self-hosting Sentry itself, which is a notoriously heavy, complex deployment. [GlitchTip](https://glitchtip.com/?ref=ditchthesaas.com) is a separate, purpose-built lightweight alternative — a Django and Vue.js app that implements Sentry's error-tracking protocol, so the official Sentry SDKs work against it without any code changes. You just point your DSN at your own GlitchTip instance instead of Sentry's cloud endpoint.

It's genuinely light: four containers (web app, a Celery background worker, Postgres, Redis) running comfortably in 512MB–1GB of RAM. That fits the same $12/month Vultr tier as most of the lighter tools on this site — no need for the $24/month tier the heavier apps like Chatwoot or Rocket.Chat need.

## What you give up

- **No distributed tracing or session replay parity.** GlitchTip focuses specifically on error tracking. Sentry's broader observability features (performance tracing, session replay) aren't fully replicated here — if you rely on those specifically, check GlitchTip's current feature set before switching.
- **Smaller integration ecosystem.** Sentry's alerting integrations (Slack, PagerDuty, etc.) are more mature; GlitchTip covers the basics but isn't as deep.

For straightforward error tracking — catch the exception, tell me what broke and where — this is a clean swap with genuinely predictable costs, which is arguably the bigger win over the dollar figure itself.

I run mine on the same kind of small [Vultr](https://www.vultr.com/?ref=9922680) instance as most of the rest of the stack — see [the full cost roll-up](https://ditchthesaas.com/how-i-cut-my-saas-bill-by-90-by-self-hosting-everything/) for how it all fits together.
